Bowl Turned from Sapele II—
$250.00
The Story
Sapele (African Mahogany Entandrophragma cylindricum) is a beautiful wood from tropical Africa, with a beautiful soft golden brown color and subtle figure. It is made especially beautiful by an outstanding iridescence, or more accurately chatoyance, a beautiful optical reflection found in certain gemstones and woods.
It turns extremely well and takes a fine finish, here—after sealing and final sanding—Danish oil is hand-rubbed into the wood. The final step in the finish is the application of a superior mixture of carnauba and beeswax in a gentle solvent. The turning appears lustrous, but without the “depth” of lacquer or other thicker finishes.
This bowl has a subtle ogee profile, finished foot, and with a gentle sway in the rim.
