Samara Vases - Black Patina

David and Reed Bowman design vases which stand alone as sculptural statements, but serve equally well as vessels for fresh flowers and dry arrangements. This work is an exercise in contrasts, with its geometric folds and straight edges softened by the double sweeping curve of the top edge, while its naturalistic, ancient-looking patina is set off by a hammered-in intricate texture, which is relieved to show the shining metal beneath. It takes its name from the winged seeds of the maple tree, which form natural propellers to spin the seeds through the air. This shape is reflected in the point-symmetry of the vase when viewed from above, and in the curves of the top.
