The Story
Nancy Simonds creates abstract gouache paintings on paper. In each piece, different arrangements of colored blocks, ovals, and arcs create a feeling of ordered transcendence. These images are anti-chaos, infused with luxuriant color and sublime, soft texture.
Simonds uses gouache paint on Rives BFK printmaking paper. She applies the paint with a sable brush, achieving beautiful translucency and depth of color. The painting grows with a build up of shapes and complex color relationships. She uses a special blotting technique, dabbing the myriad hues to create delicate, textured surfaces.
Nancy Simonds attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston after receiving a BA from Smith College. She has had 30 years of studio practice in her studio in Boston. She works with several galleries as well as corporate art consultants and decorators; her work is represented in more than 50 corporate collections. She has had multiple solo shows on Nantucket and Portland ME.
