Creating a glass object begins by gathering molten glass, shaping it in a wooden cup, and optionally adding colors and patterns. More glass is gathered as needed, and the gaffer forms a bubble in the mass, shaping and reheating it repeatedly. Tools like blocks, paddles, jacks, and wet newspapers help shape the glass, with additional elements like feet or handles sometimes added. The process can take up to two hours and may require assistants. Finished pieces are placed in a 950°F annealing oven to cool slowly and prevent cracking. The final piece can be handled and evaluated the next day. Cleaning is simple, as glass cleaner and a towel suffice—no paint means no risk of color damage.
