The Story

The creation of a glass object begins by gathering a small amount of molten glass, which is then shaped into a round form by rotating it in a wooden cup. After the initial shape is formed, colors and patterns are added, and more glass is gathered to achieve the necessary amount for the piece. The gaffer slightly chills the glass and starts inflating the first bubble, shaping the molten mass by hand and reheating it in a glory hole multiple times.

Tools such as blocks, paddles, jacks, and wet newspapers are used to refine the shape, while additional glass is added for features like feet, handles, or abstract elements. The process can take up to 2 hours and may require assistants.

Once the piece is complete, it is placed in a 950-degree annealing oven to cool slowly, preventing fractures from forming due to rapid cooling. The piece remains in the oven overnight, cooling to room temperature, and cannot be touched until the next morning when it is fully set. Cleaning is simple, as no paint is used on the glass, so a glass cleaner and towel are sufficient for maintenance, with no risk of rubbing off any color.
